There should be an option to have a folder view as a plugin or have a folder view page. Something like /departments/it/projects should be able to display all .md files in this directory. It could also just open the sidebar on the relevant level and show a blank page for now.

We are also looking forward to this feature. For using in a professional environment this is really mandatory. For this feature we were also willing to spend for a bounty.

It would be interesting if this feature is like a small script that you can integrate where you want in the page. It would suit most usage. As an example, you can look at the Children macro of XWiki: https://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Children Macro/

Good idea, or allow me to specify that I want the Navigation pane to be setup to display the folder/page hierarchy.
